Non-Surgical Treatment for Submental Fullness

Deoxycholic acid is a prescription medication that acts to disrupt fat cell membranes, allowing for your body to dissolve and absorb fat when injected into target tissues.

The Health Canada approved use of deoxycholic acid injections is for the treatment submental fullness, or a double chin. Sometimes it is used off-label to treat other stubborn areas like under arm fat, or fat on the bra line.

Your initial consultation will be with a nurse practitioner. This appointment takes approximately 15 minutes. We will spend time discussing your personal treatment goals, reviewing your individual anatomy and medical history, and creating a customized plan to ensure you are safe for treatment and for how to achieve the results you desire. 

After your initial consultation, each treatment typically takes 30 minutes. Our nurse injectors will answer any questions you may have before and after the treatment, and provide you with comprehensive aftercare instructions to ensure you get the best results from your treatment.

For best results, you may require anywhere from 2 – 6 treatments, with each treatment being at least 4 – 6 weeks apart.

The effect of deoxycholic acid treatments are permanent. Once you have achieved the desired results from your treatment regimen, there is no need for touch ups or ongoing maintenance treatments.

You may notice side effects including swelling, discomfort, pain, numbness, hardness, redness, bruising, tingling or itchiness at the injection sites. For most people, downtime is minimal and occurs most commonly after the
first treatment session. Side effects are usually less severe with subsequent
treatments. Swelling and bruising are very common, so keep in mind
your social plans when scheduling your treatments. 

Prior to administering deoxycholic acid treatment, your injector will apply a topical anesthetic as well as an ice pack to make the treatment more comfortable for you. It is suggested that you take acetaminophen prior to your appointment. The injections are felt mildly during the procedure; however, you may experience an intense sensation of heat to the area post treatment. We recommend that you apply an ice pack to the area for 10-15 minutes after the treatment to ease the discomfort. In clinical trials, mild pain was felt right after the treatment but decreased rapidly within 15 minutes.
